Lifespan Psychiatry of Colorado is dedicated to addressing the full spectrum of needs for patients, including addiction medicine and substance use in the context of chronic pain. Our offices offer comprehensive medication options for patients facing these conditions including medication assisted treatment (MAT) including buprenorphine/Sublocade, naltrexone/Vivitrol, acamprosate, disulfiram, etc. In addition to pharmacological treatment, our offices offer AccuWellness/AccuDetox, psychotherapy including individual and groups, as well as other options for treatment to address addiction and factors contributing to substance use such as trauma.

Dr. Karen Atencio is a fellowship-trained Addiction Medicine Physician at Lifespan Psychiatry of Colorado, where she is dedicated to helping individuals overcome substance use disorders and achieve lasting recovery. She is passionate about providing comprehensive, patient-centered care that addresses both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction.
Dr. Atencio earned her Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed her residency in Anesthesia at Indiana University School of Medicine. Following this, she completed a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, Arizona. Her training includes expertise in medication-assisted treatment and managing substance use disorder in the setting of chronic pain. In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Atencio is actively involved in teaching medical students, Addiction Medicine Fellows, and Pain Management fellows.
Outside of work, Dr. Atencio enjoys reading, cooking, and spending time with her family. She believes in a holistic approach to recovery, which includes nurturing physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
